Charles Harrison Townsend

Charles Harrison Townsend, ‘Omar' woven furnishing textile, 1896-1900. Museum no. CIRC. 887-1967.

Omar is one of Charles Harrison Townsend’s few large-scale designs for textiles. The elegant repeat pattern in the Arts and Crafts style shows stylised lotus blossoms. The pattern is an adaptation of designs found on 16th- and 17th-century Turkish velvets.

Dandelion One, designed by Angie Lewin

Dandelion One & Two Designed by Angie Lewin

Dandelion One & Two are the first screen printed fabrics designed by artist-printmaker Angie Lewin.
Angie studied BA(Hons) Fine Art Printmaking at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, followed by a year’s postgraduate printmaking at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts.
Her limited edition linocut and wood engraving prints are inspired by skeletal plantforms in the North Norfolk landscape and also the contrasting landscape and flora of Scotland. These can be seen at a number of galleries across the UK.

Lucienne Day

Herb Antony Fabric, 1956 Lucienne Day Manufactured by Heals

The Festival of Britain in 1951 revealed to the nation a fresh, contemporary and optimistic style of design that swept away the drabness of wartime. Lucienne Day’s engaging, innovative textiles patterned and coloured these new look interiors, helping to create the forward-looking style which transformed British notions of good design.

Catharine Ellis

All fabrics in this collection use only natural colorants: either dyes or pigments. Issues of safety for the global and my own personal environment have led me to seriously explore the natural colorants. The use of mordants to alter single color dyes and the availability of natural dye extracts and pigments makes this a feasible approach to coloring cloth.

My work all begins with threads, which I weave into cloth. Originally I was trained in traditional woven technique, which led me to weave functional fabrics in natural fibers for many years.

There are numerous mediums of textile works and they include print, weave, collage, tapestry, installation and the list goes on. So on this blog I am going to explore the world of textiles and will look at a different textile each day.
