Tattoos 1998-2000
During the mixed-media textiles project 'Tattoos' I was interested in studying the skin as a surface on which people literally inscribe their personal and social values. What particularly fascinated me was the intensity and expression of the graphical body ornamentation practices from the Pacific region as well as the facial tattoos. Once used as marks of identification indicating status, rank and individual features, now these signs talk more about how body is always culturally manipulated.
Different textile techniques were used to develop a fabric range based on body ornamentation. It is a complex of vividly coloured, sculpturally woven and primitive printed textiles.
